| Personal History | After Kirk left Ardara and referred the Troglytes complaints to the Federation Bureau of Industrialization, the Ardarans were able to get their masks to safely mine zenite for the Federation. However, centuries of prejudice are not eliminated immediately, and rarely within 100 years. Sure, the Troglytes got their masks, schools, and basic necessities. What they did not get was respect. Ardara became a world where theoretically everything was equal, but they were still kept separate from one another. Predictably, in such a world, the Troglytes were considered “lesser” by the Cloud people. Daltom spotted the disparity in treatment early on in his life. Friends and relatives were routinely harassed by police. In shuttles to places, they had to make way for the Cloud people and sit in the back or give up their seats. While people on the planet lived in self-made homes, the people in the Clouds lived in relative luxury. Troglytes worked in the mines and the Cloud people were fortunate enough to study math, the sciences, and arts. While Daltom might have been able to accept this as a child, things seeming irreversible, it all changed when his father was arrested for theft of some of a Cloud person’s jewelry. His father protested his innocence. However, he was subjected to the rostrum and eventually confessed. He ended up being sentenced to ten years of hard labor in the mines without pay. The rostrum was a torture device. While the Federation laws prohibited torture or capital punishment, the Federation seemed to turn a blind eye to it where Ardana was concerned. That moment in time made Daltom realize that all the power was with the Cloud people. He therefore decided that his only way to make things better for the Troglytes was to ingratiate himself and make himself indispensable to the Cloud people. Since STEM classes were not as strong on the planet as up in the Clouds, Daltom concentrated on the social sciences, eventually finding his way to psychology. Throughout his childhood, he made it a point to mediate and diffuse issues between the Cloud people and Troglytes whenever present. His efforts being noticed, he was invited to study at the prestigious Ardanan Institute for Psychological Sciences. At school, Daltom made certain to make friends with all of his professors and as many Cloud folks as possible, soon becoming known as an “Enlightened Trog.” This status afforded him some leeway in his studies and when he took the rare opportunity to assert himself against Cloud people positions. However, what he also learned was that many of these people were not inherently bad or vicious folks. Subconsciously, what they did have was a goal, and that was to stay in the positions they were in. This theory became the foundation of his burgeoning philosophy: Beings will always act in accordance with their own highest motives and desires. Applying the theory to himself, he realized that he was doing the same thing. His highest goal and desire was the equality of his people. Now conscious of his actions, he was free to design activities that would achieve those goals. At first, he thought that assisting Trogs through their various plights would help raise their status. Thus, he did his residency and thesis study at the Troglyte Medical Clinic. Unfortunately, he found while he could assist with relieving the day to day troubles, few other Trogs were willing to ingratiate themselves to the Cloud folks and even in so doing, it did not improve their status. His only logical recourse then must be to take the problem to those who had improved the Trog’s status but did not cure their situation: the Federation. Taking the lessons he learned from working with the Cloud folks, he enrolled in Starfleet Academy, worked hard, and tried to impress his professors. While he was strong in weapons, martial arts, and practical teachings, he struggled with the hard sciences and engineering, ultimately graduating in the middle of his class. Nonetheless, step one of his goal was completed and he would now work to increase himself in the ranks to potentially get to Captain or Admiral to right the Trogs plight. While he has steadily increased in rank, he is somewhat rankled that the Bajorans recently got their freedom through the assistance of the Federation. He realized it once again proved his theory that beings only act in their self-interest. After all, what good was helping the Trogs now that they had the zenite? However, getting Deep Space 9 was crucial for the Federation, thus it made sense to ally with the Bajorans. This fact has left Daltom a bit more jaded recently and he is sour whenever the subject is broached. |
