| Physical Description | Areum Choi is a career Starfleet officer that carries herself with quiet precision and professionalism. Her respect for the uniform she wears is noticeable, always fresh, crisp, and as wrinkle free as can be. She polishes her boots regularly, almost ensuring they reflect like a black mirror. Choi is a compact and athletically built, a track and field star during her academy days, and nearly a professional skater in her youth. Always coming off as composed with her physical stance and difficult to read poker race, she learned a lot in her career as she transition from counseling to security, and eventually into command. Choi’s dark hair is often worn short and neatly styled when in uniform, practical for when she’s on duty while still conveying a composed professionalism. When she is not on duty or for more relaxed occasions, she will let it be a bit loose, though her hair is always kept short. The expression etched on her face is one of calm confidence, observance, and can be faintly unreadable. Choi’s sharp eyes scan rooms and other people to assess more than they reveal on the surface. That’s where her background in forensic psychology comes into play. There’s a stillness to her posture, the kind that suggests control rather than rigidity. |

Personality & Traits
| Personality Overview | Choi has almost always been a disciplined, analytical, and deeply principled individual. From childhood, she learned discipline through ice skating. She improved by being analytical, studying others and comparing what they did to how she did it. Through her Starfleet career, Choi possesses a counselor’s insight into human behavior, paired with a security officer’s instinct for threat assessment. This combination makes her exceptionally perceptive yet also closely guarded. She keeps her cards close. It has made her a strong candidate for command. She values order, loyalty, and institutional integrity above any sort of personal sentiment. This is reflective of her crew quarters wherever she’s been regardless of how long she’s been there. Personality in her décor is evident, but her minimalist ways shine through. It’s always tidy, contemporary with small nods to culture and tradition. Every surface clear of smudges, all tables adorned with coasters for beverages. While not an unkind woman, she is not naturally warm or affectionate, even with friends. Her warmth is reserved for those closest to her, and trust must be earned, not assumed though respect is always a given. Her moral framework is rather black and white, sometimes to a fault as she rarely operates within shades of grey. Noticeably, Choi seldom has patience for ambiguity when it comes to duty. She took an oath and wore a uniform. That was enough for her. There’s no need to question that. Due to this deep loyalty to Starfleet, her disdain for Maquis sympathizers is not loud, but it is firm and unwavering. It’s deeply rooted in personal belief that divided loyalty cost lives, and she refuses to partake in anything that unnecessarily costs lives of innocents. Her only admiration of the Maquis is their commitment to bringing down Cardassian war criminals, but she herself does not believe all Cardassians are evil nor does she believe the Maquis’ methods justify their means. In a command capacity, Commander Areum Choi leads with control and clarity. She is not a charismatic leader in the traditional sense, but she inspires confidence through competence and consistency. It is her deliberate decision-making ways, informed through both data and psychological insight, that have caused her to become respected by some within Starfleet Command yet others have not been fond of her dogmatic ways. |

| Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths •Unshakable Moral Conviction Choi possesses a deeply rooted sense of right and wrong. Once Areum Choi determines the ethical course ahead, she commits fully to it, making her exceptionally reliable in crisis situations where hesitation could cost lives. •Analytical Detachment Emotional attachment is not something Areum brings with her when she puts on her uniform, she steps aside emotionally and assess situations with clarity. Combined with her forensic psychology background, this allows her to read motives, predict behavior, and make decisions free from the contamination of bias or sentiment. •Duty-Driven Leadership Choi leads by example, holding herself to the same (if not higher) standards as those subordinates under her. This creates a quiet authority; the crew may not always feel close to her, but they generally will come to trust her to do what is right. Weaknesses •Rigid Ideology Her stern mindset can make her inflexible, a bit set in her ways. Once she defines something as unjust or disloyal (especially regarding Maquis sympathizers), she struggles to see nuance, potentially leading to harsh or alienating decisions. She has a deep respect for a chain of command. She will never openly disagree with a Captain’s decisions in front of the crew, but would offer counterpoints in a decision-making setting. •Emotional Distance Choi’s reliance on reasoning and control often comes at the expense of connection. She keeps others at arm’s length, which can hinder crew cohesion and make her seem cold or unapproachable. It can take time for anyone to warm up to her. Though she is not as detached as a Vulcan, some may look for any indication of ‘pointed ears’ when first meeting her. •Self-Imposed Burden of Perfection Choi places an immense amount of pressure on herself to embody Starfleet ideals. Failure whether it be real or simply perceived will hit her harder than she allows others to see, and she rarely seeks support, believing she must carry responsibility alone. |
Medical History
| Known Allergies | Corophizine |
| Personal History | Areum Choi was born in 2327 in the city of Incheon on Earth, into a family grounded in service. Her mother was a medical researcher, and her father, a Federation public defender. Both of them instilled in her a respect for both institutional order and individual rights which provided an early foundation that would later evolve into something far more rigid. As a child, Choi was perceptive and introspective, displaying a natural ability to read emotional nuance and behavioral patterns. She learned to ice skate from an early age and became a competitive figure skater. Areum Choi began her Starfleet career after being admitted to Starfleet Academy in 2345 as part of its Science Division where she pursued the social science of sociology. She was ‘pre-med’ during her Starfleet Academy years with a goal to finish towards the upper echelon of her graduating class so that she could pursue an advanced degree. Her early work actually narrowed in on criminal behavior, interrogation analysis, and rehabilitation assessments within Starfleet’s judicial system which meant she took some security courses. After graduating from Starfleet Academy and earning her commissioned rank of ensign, she postponed ship assignment to remain on Earth. She enrolled at Starfleet Medical to complete a two year advanced studies degree in Psychology with a concentration on Forensic Psychology. She was then given her first assignment that took her away from Earth as a junior counselor. Her early assignments placed her in demanding environments of frigates, transport hubs, and detention facilities where she worked with trauma victims, unstable officers, and detainees awaiting transfer. Over time, exposure to the darker edges of Federation space reshaped her path. She transitioned into Security, where her psychological expertise gave her a distinct advantage in investigations, interrogations, and crisis negotiation. She began to question her career trajectory. By the mid-2350s, now Lieutenant Areum Choi requested a transfer to Starfleet Security, seeking a more directly involved role in preserving order. Her transition was a rather unconventional one as not many counselors make a shift to security, but the request was approved due to her exemplary record and specializations. She completed tactical certification and quickly distinguished herself in investigative and interrogation work, where her psychological expertise gave her a unique advantage. She developed a reputation for precision, composure, and an ability to uncover truth others missed. Her career advanced steadily through the late 2350s and early 2360s, earning commendations and rising through the lieutenant ranks to Lieutenant Commander. In 2364, Areum Choi was appointed Commandant of the Starfleet Stockade on Jaros II. The facility housed a volatile mix of once Starfleet officers that turned into offenders, including smugglers, dissidents, and in later months of her command, sympathizers to the Maquis. During her tenure, Choi enforced strict discipline and implemented procedural reforms that significantly reduced internal violence and escape attempts. While widely respected for her fairness, she became known for her uncompromising stance on loyalty and her growing intolerance for those who operated outside Federation law. Taking and passing the Bridge Commander’s Examination in 2368, she was on the waitlist for promotion to Commander with the intent to remain second in command of the stockade, content in her position. Despite this accomplishment, Areum Choi learned the hard way that politics mattered a lot more with the number of pips on your collar and the positions of authority you were in. A riot in the east wing of the stockade had led to the escape of two dozen inmates. In the process of securing the east wing, a few security guards were injured and one inmate was killed. The inmate happened to be a Starfleet ensign, son of a prominent admiral. He had been court martialed for insubordination and striking a Cardassian dignitary. The Admiral was looking for a head on a platter. Choi ended up becoming his target. She was temporarily suspended from her position pending an investigation by Starfleet Internal Affairs. Ultimately, she was ‘officially’ cleared of any wrongdoing, but the clout that the admiral had continued to cast a long shadow of doubt and scrutiny. Her promotion to Commander continued to be ‘delayed’ or ‘postponed’ and was buried in paperwork. To complicate matters further, her involvement in a joint project between Starfleet Security and Starfleet Intelligence ended abruptly. Choi had been tasked with reviewing the personnel files of prominent Starfleet officers, command level officers, combing through and flagging individuals that she felt posed a potential threat to Federation-Cardassian relations. Her involvement in the project was suspended and her high level security clearance revoked while she was finalizing a list of officers of concern which included Lieutenant Commander Calvin Hudson, a very well liked officer with friends in high places that discarded Choi’s warnings as ‘paranoia’ and ‘propaganda.’ Several months later, after years of administrative command and demonstrated leadership under pressure, Choi discovered herself reassigned to be Executive Officer of the USS Thunderbird. Although seasoned with years of experience, she would need to navigate unfamiliar obstacles of the bridge of a starship rather than running a stockade. Lieutenant Commander Choi arrived aboard the Thunderbird as a seasoned, disciplined officer whose career had been shaped by duty and well-earned disillusionment; however, her belief in the Federation is absolute though it is no longer idealistic. It has evolved into something sharper, more deliberate, and far less forgiving. |
